La Brunche Vita: The Story of a Budget Brunch

Unfortunately, I have been affected by the furlough and the government shutdown.  These events have caused me to redefine my luxuries in life.  One of these luxuries is brunch.  I love eating good food, indulging in great cocktails, and catching up with friends.  A easy and efficient way to save money is to eat at home. Eating at home not only is cost efficient, but it gives you limitless options for food and drink.  This past Sunday, I decided to bring the party to my house by hosting a potluck brunch.

The $4 place setting

The Dutchman and I are planning a rustic vintage themed wedding in Western NY.  For the occasion, I have been collecting vintage plates and glasses acquired at thrift shops, estate sales, and my parents' basement.  In addition, I have also bought Ball canning and mason jars to use as drinking glasses and flower vases.  I wanted to acquire pieces I could get some day to day use beyond the wedding.  The place settings looked gorgeous on the table topped with a vinyl lace tablecloth I found at Ross for $6.99.  At first I was apprehensive about a vinyl table cloth but it looks beautiful on the table, photographs well, and most importantly, it's easy to clean.

The night before the brunch, my sister gave me a huge Spanish pumpkin from her garden.  I roasted it in the oven and pureed it to make pumpkin bread and pumpkin pancakes (recipes from Martha Stewart ). I taught Carlis to make ham and egg cups, which she mastered in no time.  My friend Khalilah made an amazing Bloody Mary bar with all the fixings: cucumbers, pickled pear onions, celery sticks, and olives, which we served in mason jars. Monica from Monalavinia made a gorgeous cheese plate of brie and grapes.  Tammy and Haya brought the orange juice and cava for the mimosas. For a sweet ending, Rebecca brought a nice helping of Pain au Chocolat and Morgan brought a decadent bottle of Don Ciccio & Figli Limoncello.
We spent over four hours eating, drinking, and exchanging ideas on life.  This lovely afternoon also reminded me that we don't need fancy restaurants and overpriced tableware to share an amazing, inspired afternoon.  Thanks ladies for such an amazing afternoon!
